This week we have been busily determining traits of main characters in a story. We all read Pumpkin Fiesta and found examples of Fernando acting foolishly for homework. In small groups we decided upon three traits that would describe Foolish Fernando and Old Juana. I was very impressed with the discussions the groups were having. They were very careful to make sure the trait fit the character and use support from the story. Here we are working on our projects and the final product.

We keep this paper in our reading folder to help us determine character traits. |
We have jumped back into narrative writing using our new planning sheets. First, we "build" of story and decided on the problem, setting, characters, and solution. Then we plan out our character. We think about things the character will do, think, and feel.
We remembered that planning makes it easier to write our story, it organizes our thoughts, and it makes our writing better.
Here is an example that I did for the class.
The class is enjoying the beginning of our geometry unit in math.
Today we explored geometry concepts using pattern blocks and tangrams.
We also played a rousing game of Brrr! Bump! to continue practicing math facts.
Our extends questions for 2D and 3D shapes will ask the students to compare and contrast two different shapes. They will need to find two attributes that are similar and two attributes that are different.
We discussed what a rectangle and parallelogram have in common as part of our parallel lines lesson on Thursday.
Our class is excited to be part of the vocabulary pilot this year. When presented with a new word we first think of ways to describe the word. We put the different descriptions together to develop a meaning. The next step is to illustrate the word. Finally we assess our own understanding of the word.
We will review and come back to these words often.
I hope you can see how much we enjoy learning new words!
Have a wonderful weekend!
