Settling In

I'm sorry this post is a little late.  I have some videos that were taken today that I wanted to be sure were included in today's blog.

We have had a very nice week.  It never fails to amaze me how far we come in such a short period of time.  The children have been working with partners and in groups in both reading and math.  They are already very self sufficient.  I walk around to monitor, take pictures, and film video.  The class needs very little assistance from me.  I know things are going to go just as smoothly when we begin reading groups next week.

The class has been working on extending the math targets ordering numbers to 999 and comparing numbers to 9,999.  We have played games, worked on substituting the greater than, less than, and equal to symbols (>  <  =) with words to ensure that the students truly understand the number sentences they are writing.  For example 176 < 854 is read aloud as, 176 is less than 854.  This target will be assessed next week.  I will continue to send home the assessments so you always know how your child is performing on each target.  The green papers are questions that I expect the class to answer correctly.  The pink papers are the extends questions.  I encourage everyone to try to solve the problems, but it is okay if they are not successful.  We talk about strategies to solve these problems before we take the unit test, but again I do not expect everyone to be successful on the more challenging problems.  I send these home for all children so you are able to see examples of  the questions/problems.

Please enjoy the videos of some of the 2nd graders explaining and playing two of our math games.

We have been working on oral reading fluency by reading a play with a group and reading poems with a partner.  To enable us to work more with our poems the class will begin taking home their poetry binders on Friday instead of Thursday.  It is not necessary to sign off on the poems, but please encourage your child to at least read through the new poems.  Once a week I have the students read a poem aloud to the class with either a partner or in a small group.  This sometimes can make 2nd graders nervous. However, it is important for them to begin learning how to speak in front of a group.

Reach for the Stars!  We have been in 2nd grade for 17 days!  Since we know our routines and schedules, it is now time to work on our individual goals.  You can find pictures of the class with their star below.  Be sure to ask your child what they are going to work on.

Have a wonderful weekend!
